1.0 Organisation Description

Asia Piling Co Pte Ltd. is a mid-size Singapore company specializing in foundation works including bore piling. It is a Building and Contractor Authority (BCA) registered specialist builder (Piling works) and contractor. Founded in 2017 as a private company, it has 25 core staff on its payroll and sub-contracts much of its work to self-employed freelancers based on project needs. 

2.0 Workplace Study

As part of this client-based study, the author plans to implement heavy-duty sweep equipment to control the extreme levels of dust and pollutants found at the company’s worksite. Construction activities generate a lot of dust, which poses a significant health risk for its employees and the surrounding environment (Yan, et al., 2020). The long-term health effects of construction dust include lung cancer and silicosis etc (Tong, et al., 2018). Short-term effects include irritation of ENT (eye, nose, and throat), allergic reactions, bronchitis, or pneumonia. 

3.0 Aims and Objectives

The author will pursue the following objectives

• To implement heavy-duty sweep equipment in controlling dust at a construction site
• To assess the efficacy of proposed implementation by determining workers’ perception of dust levels before and after implementation

Using appropriate control methods, the author hopes to achieve at least a 20% reduction in perceived dust levels by implementing sweep equipment at this workplace within 3 months

5.0 Potential Barriers/Challenges

There can be several challenges in completing this project. First, I will need the approval of senior management and site supervisor to carry out the initial assessment and employee surveys. If the management is not supportive, this project may not be possible. I plan to overcome this limitation by explaining the rationale of this project and how it can benefit the company. Second, I will need volunteer employees who will be willing to participate in the surveys. This will be an easier challenge to tackle as I have a good network in the organization, which will help me recruit participants. Third, I will need the approval of the senior management to implement the proposed sweeping equipment, which can be a costly initial investment 

6.0 Learning Outcomes

LO1: Synthesise and demonstrate skills and competencies required for successful integrated management.

I plan to deal with all aspects of this project, including carrying out initial employee surveys, suggesting and implementing dust control methods (sweeping equipment), and doing the post-control surveys after 3 months. This will require me to coordinate with various stakeholders including the senior management, supervisor, and employees at Asia Pacific Co Pte Ltd. 

LO2: Displays resourcefulness and initiative in tackling a variety of practical tasks in an occupational setting.

Air pollutants due to pilling work has serious long-term health effects on employees and can reduce their life-span. I will suggest a cost-effective method of using sweeping equipment to control dust. While there are many dust control methods available, the project’s success will depend upon the cost-effectiveness of recommendations so that it does not hurt the profitability of the company, while minimizing the harmful effects of dust on employees. 

LO3: Examine the critical practical concerns that arise in carrying out a project within the workplace and synthesize the constraints that exist within such frameworks.

LO4: Critically apply knowledge about the practical application and synthesize the different abilities required to implement the chosen client-based tasks.

While suggesting recommendations for dust control methods at the workplace, I will ensure that these meet the Workplace Health and Safety (WSH) requirements of Ministry of Manpower, Singapore. This will help the company meet the local legal and statutory requirements.
