AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
To enable students to gain familiarity with some typical reactions of some of the more common functional groups and to be able to apply these functional group tests to the identification of an unknown organic compound. The use of IR (Infra-red) and NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) spectroscopy, MS (mass spectrometry) and qualitative elemental analysis (oxygen flask test) will primarily be used to confirm the identification of your unknown organic compound. Melting point or boiling point of your Unknown (provided) will also be an important distinctive property of your Unknown.
Objectives of the laboratory course:
1) To acquire skills in experimental (manipulative) techniques.
2) To provide an introduction to the acquiring of 13C and DEPT NMR spectra.
3) To develop the skills of independent scientific observation, reporting and unknown organic compound identification (your organic unknown and an unknown alcohol).
4) To perform real world career-relevant analysis and generate conclusions based on experimental and theoretical information.
