Effective hand hygiene for healthcare workers is a core strategy in the prevention of healthcare associated (HCA) infections and also antimicrobial resistance transmission (Hand Hygiene Australia 2021). However, in healthcare, especially in aged care, compliance remains a major issue. In acute healthcare facilities and aged care facilities, auditing of hand hygiene compliance and quality improvement programs are requirement for the new accreditation standards (Orr et al 2016). In this essay, we will critically evaluate the compliance of hand hygiene in aged care workers, while also discussing why hand hygiene is essential part of aged care and discuss the non-compliance which will lead to healthcare associated infections. Furthermore, in this essay we will evaluate various studies to explain the behaviour of non-compliance which can be due to knowledge, training, perception, or facility culture and also discuss why it requires monitoring and evaluation. Here we will also discuss the necessary improvement strategies to increase the compliance of hand hygiene and ultimately reduce the overall cost and healthcare associated infections. There are also barriers that may arise during implementation of these strategies, the role that stakeholder’s play and the policies, procedures that have been enforced by the State and National authorities.
