3.1 Introduction

In study unit 1 you were introduced to what research is. Among many other definitions of research, Leedy and Ormrod (2014) defines research as a systematic process of collecting analysing and interpreting information in order to increase understanding of the phenomenon of interest. The same authors also identifies 8 distinct characteristics of research, which is indicated in study unit 1. The first characteristic of research according to these authors is that research originate with a question or problem. The fourth characteristic indicates that the research is guided by the specific research problem, question or hypothesis. 3.2 The topic of your research

One of the first steps in developing your research strategy should be to decide on the focus of your research. Before you can frame your problem and research question you have to find a topic that might lead to one. It is important to note that most authors see the topic and the research problem as one and the same thing. The topic is a general indication of the subject that is being
researched. It indicates the starting point of initial interest. According to Booth et al. (2008) a topic is an interest specifically enough for a person to become an expert on it.
