Boundary Violation Case Study:
Sean is a junior clinician with a forensic community clinic. He is working with a client, Emma a young woman in her mid-twenties, who is engaged with the service for court-ordered treatment following seriously assaulting an abusive ex-partner with a knife. She has an extensive history with child protection services and regularly attends emergency departments in emotional crisis and for medical attention following significant self-injurious behaviour. Emma struggles with chronic depression, rage, and anxiety, and has formed a new relationship that is again physically abusive. Emma frequently comes in highly distraught, and Sean is concerned about her welfare. Sean violates clinic rules by staying late to see Emma for 2-hour sessions during her more stressful and challenging periods. Occasionally, Sean drives Emma home in a work car, not to her house but to the corner of her street, so that she does not need to catch the train late at night. Sean also buys Emma food when transporting her, as he knows that she is struggling financially. Following a session in which Emma presented in crisis, and Sean was concerned for her safety, he gives Emma his mobile phone number so she can call him when she is overwhelmed and suicidal. Emma starts to call Sean one to two times every week to discuss her difficulties, and this reduces her presentation at local emergency departments. Sean does not tell his supervisor about staying late at the clinic or providing his mobile phone number. He feels that he is doing the right thing by Emma and he has noticed positive improvements but feels his supervisor would not understand and may reprimand him
