Business reports are organised, objective presentations of observations, experiences or facts used in the decision-making process.
Reports are very practical documents which are common in many disciplines. However, their structure and content can vary widely depending upon the context in which they are written.
The purpose of a report is usually to analyse and present the outcomes of a project, research or a workplace experience. Frequently, recommendations are made based on these outcomes. A report often provides information about research or data collection … It also draws upon previously published information. Some of the many ways you can draw upon your research in a report include justifying your aims and research methods, demonstrating the validity of your findings, and identifying areas for future research. Any information you incorporate from your reading will need to be referenced.

Language use
Business report writing is formal in style. Formal language is objective, generally written in the third person, and avoids colloquial expressions. Paragraphs are generally short and concise, and dot points used where applicable. Check your unit outline or with your lecturer to determine specific requirements.

- The TOC lists all the sections of the report, and has been created using the appropriate document processing tool (look this up if you are unfamiliar). (Excluded from the word count).
- The report items should be listed as 1.0, 2.0, and so on.
- Do not include the cover page or TOC in the table of contents.

- IntroductionThis section states:
- the purpose of the report (what will this report do?)
- the scope of the report (what this report will cover)
- any limitations of the report (is there anything that will not be included? why?)
- the overall objective of the report (why write this report?)
- Section NameThe body of the report contains headings and sub-headings which reflect the contents of each section. Includes information on method of data collection (if applicable), the findings of the report and discussion of findings in light of theory
- Sections should use outline numbering (1.0, 2.0, etc), subsections should be numbered accordingly (2.1, 2.2, etc)
- The body of your report may draw upon diagrams and figures, but these should be labelled as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. Be sure to indicate the figure name in your writing, so your reader knows what you are referring to.
- All images should be cited in-text.

- This section summarises the main body of the report and clearly follows the order of your findings.
- Do not include any new information in this section
- Do not include diagrams or graphs.
- ReferencesOn a new page, write your reference list in ACU’s Harvard style. Harvard often contains variations in other institutions, so it is essential that you review ACU’s guide to avoid unnecessary loss of marks.
- The heading “References” is centred at the top of the list
- References should be single-spaced with a one line space in between each reference
- Each reference should be left-aligned without indents
- The references are arranged alphabetically by author family name
- If there is no author move the title to the author position.
- If two references have both the same author and same year, use (2015a) (2015b) arrange alphabetically first by author then by title
- Spell out the full name of a group author e.g. Australian Catholic University
