Assignment Task

This assignment asks you to do research in order to help form an argument. The role of the research in this essay is to support the argument that you are making. It is not meant to provide you with an argument, nor to make up the bulk of the content of your paper. In terms of source materials, you must have at least two research sources. Your research paper will look to answer one of the following questions:

1. What could be seen as unfair or unjust about the process and terms involved in the setting up and negotiating of Treaty 7 in Alberta?

2. Why would many Indigenous people in Canada not want to recognize Canada as a nation, generally, and something like Canada’s 150th “birthday” specifically?

3. Why was it argued that First Nations children needed to be separated from their families for the purpose of residential schooling, and how were First Nations families convinced to allow this to happen?

Note that for any of these questions there is not one correct answer, or even one way to go about answering the question, but for all of them the way you try to answer the question will be the argument, or thesis, of your paper, and to properly answer any of them research will be required.

For your research sources, they must be credible. We will talk about what makes for a credible source in class and in the Ask the Library activity.
