Having completed task 1, it is now time to undertake the activity or experience that you have chosen. You would normally use the same activity as you proposed in Task 1, but if you received feedback that requires/recommends a change of activity you can complete a different activity provided you explain the change.  

Examples of activities include volunteering at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, visiting a church or community centre you are not familiar with, taking an exercise class you would not normally consider, or shopping for a product or service not normally associated with your gender. While we encourage you to go outside your comfort zone, you must not physically endanger yourself, humiliate others, or do anything illegal. 

You then need to compare your preconceptions about what you thought you would see or hear or what you thought would happen with your actual experiences.  You will then write a reflection on the activity.

Assessment criteria

  • Ability to recognize, explain and critically analyse (using clear and persuasive communication strategies, discerning course vocabulary and relevant scholarly research) the impact that factors such as gender, family form, socio-economics, cultural background and cultural identity can have on educational pathways, experiences and outcomes for diverse learners
  • Application of research relevant to analysis of course concepts, and accuracy in referencing
  • Communication skills (including ability to follow instructions for the assessment task)

  • Your activity:
  • Will need to be completed for the first time during Trimester 1. You CANNOT reflect on an experience earlier in your life.
  • Must be something that is substantially new/unfamiliar and potentially confronting or challenging.
  • Must relate directly to your chosen concept (for example, you might never have eaten avocado, but if your chosen concept is “nuclear family” it might be hard to establish the relevance).
  • You would normally use the same activity as you proposed in Task 1, but if you received feedback that requires/recommends a change of activity you can complete a different activity. Explain the change in section 1.
  • Write in the first person but keep an academic audience in mind: you can show your personality, but don’t become excessively casual.
  • Stay within the word limit: 1000 words plus/minus 10%, ie 900-1100 words.
  • Incorporate research into your own words. You may use short quotations integrated into a sentence (quotes of approx. 25 words) but should not use lengthy quotes copied and pasted. Always lead into a quotation in some way, don’t just drop someone else’s quote into your paragraph as a standalone sentence.
  • When identifying the relevance of the concept to your own life and analysing the activity, provide relevant details about yourself and your upbringing/prior experiences (but you are not obliged to share anything you want to keep private).
