Case Study:
A woman of 27 comes for counselling complaining of a distressing level of anxiety in social situations. She dreads and avoids events where she might have to talk to strangers or where other people’s attention might be drawn to her. She also feels very anxious about using public transport and being in crowded places. She is worried that she is becoming isolated both at work and in her private life. She lives with her parents and does not have a partner, though she has two long-standing friends whom she sees quite frequently and with whom she feels comfortable. When you first meet her she tends to avoid eye contact and seems very apologetic about herself. She has not had previous psychological help.

Taking into account that this is only a very brief sketch, with much information missing, use person centred theory imaginatively to construct a possible explanation for this client’s predicament. Critically discuss, from a theoretical point of view, how she might be helped by person centred therapy.
