DESCRIPTION
A critical role that a clinical coach has is to provide constructive, objective assessment and feedback to a range of healthcare professionals and students to improve practice. As your learning up until this point has highlighted, a well-designed tool allows for objective assessment and feedback. For this assessment task, choose one (1) of the two scenarios outlined below, and complete the two parts listed under the scenarios:
Scenario 1— Coaching others about feedback: You are a clinical coach working for a large tertiary hospital that is a major placement provider to 3 universities in nursing, midwifery, medicine, and allied health. You have had feedback from all three universities that there is a problem in preceptors’ abilities to provide feedback to students where they are underperforming while on clinical placement.
Scenario 2 — Providing feedback as a coach: You are a clinical coach working in a small metropolitan private hospital. Last week, you were working with new graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) in the surgical ward when several of these NGRNs complained that you were too subjective in your coaching, and asked for evidence to justify your assessment and feedback to them.
PART 1: After reading your chosen scenario carefully, identify the key issue for the clinical coach. Develop a clinical coaching tool that you could use as a coach to assist you to address the key issue identified in the scenario. There is no word limit, but you must ensure that your tool clearly focuses on the key issue, so ensure you understand the scenario you have chosen. You must not use a tool (or parts of) developed by any other person or organisation as this constitutes academic misconduct. This tool must be entirely your own creation.
PART 2: Provide a short reflection (500 words) on the focus and components of your coaching tool based on your analysis of the key issue identified in the scenario, along with your understanding of the ways in which coaching tools can assist to provide constructive, objective feedback. You are expected to substantiate your reflection with contemporary literature. You may use first person. This reflection does not need an introduction or conclusion.
