Debbie tells you that she would like to have children in the future but wants to finish her hairdressing apprenticeship first, which will take another 3 years. She is aware that the older she is, the harder it is to conceive. You know that getting pregnant after the age of 35 is difficult and these women often have high-risk pregnancies with complications. Debbie is planning to freeze her eggs so she can use them in the future. Debbie’s former partner lives in your street and occasionally say hi to one another.

CASE STUDY 2: Tilly

You are working a night shift in a busy hospital. Earlier in the day a well- known film actor, Jordan Starr was admitted to your ward for prostate surgery. You are working tonight with RN Tilly. She arrived 10 minutes late for handover because she had been at a family birthday party. You start work with the people you are allocated to care for and a little bit later you are outside the open door of Jordan’s room. Tilly is in the room and you can see that Jordan is asleep. You notice Tilly open his bag, take out a watch and put it back into her pocket. She then used her phone to take an unflattering photo of Jordan with her phone and uploaded it to her Facebook page with a comment ”Look who is here! I am lucky to be Jordan’s nurse tonight. He doesn’t look as cool as he does in the films”. Tilly sees you at the doorway  and noticed you concern. She whispers “it’s OK because my Facebook security settings are set to private and so only my family will see the photo”. You return to the nurses’ desk and Tilly comes and sits beside you. You notice the smell of alcohol on her breath.

CASE STUDY 3: Branco

Branco Popalovich is a 92 year-old man. He is a resident n an aged care facility where he has lived for the past 5 years. He has past history of right sided CVA with a dense left hemiplegia, Parkinson’s disease, advanced Lewy-body dementia and gout. Branco cries for much of the day and often tries to get up from his chair, which puts him at risk for a fall. He requires full assistance to eat and drink. Branco’s daughter Martha is the legal guardian. She speaks with his GP and asks that Branco’ no longer be given food or fluids and the GP documents this as an order in Branco’s progress notes after a thorough assessment of Branco’s current health status. However, Branco keeps pointing at the jug of water beside him, The GP has also documented a not for resuscitation order in Branco’s notes.
