David Healy has been referred to the community mental health team for assessment by his doctor. His letter of referral states that David complains of being irritable, anxious, and depressed with occasional thoughts of self-harm. When you meet David, he states that his main problems center around not being able to hold down a job or a relationship. He describes walking out of any job he gets after ‘flying off the handle’. He admits to drinking heavily to help him sleep and to help him cope with the ‘emptiness’ he feels. The consultant psychiatrist has given him a provisional diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder/Emotionally Unstable Personality disorder.
