In this assignment, the student will demonstrate an understanding of the varying styles and characteristics of nurse leaders. Through critical self-reflection the student will develop self-awareness into their own leadership abilities while examining and considering the application of leadership styles.   

An important underpinning of great leaders is having an understanding of their own leadership philosophy. A leadership philosophy guides the leader’s actions, behaviors, reactions, and thoughts. Developing a philosophy of leadership requires one to critically reflect on their own core values and assumptions and integrate their values and assumptions with a leadership style and characteristics to form the substance of their leadership philosophy.  

This assignment is the first step in creating your own philosophy of leadership. You may not have your leadership philosophy completely defined; however, over the span of this course you will continue to refine your leadership philosophy.   

In Unit 1, you will find the Developing a Philosophy of Leadership Guide (Leadership Paradigms, Inc, 2006).  This guide will help you to understand that your leadership philosophy becomes your true north. Everything you do, everything you say, every action, every decision, every plan is filtered through your philosophy. Your philosophy becomes your rudder. It helps you to maintain the right direction. It is your compass.
