This Assessment is to be submitted after you have read the learning materials on Connect.
You will need to access a wide variety of information in order to complete this Assessment. If you do not have access to a library or the Internet, please contact the Justice Team and a suitable arrangement will be made.
You are required to write a professional email using the template provided. The written component of this Assessment should be approximately 600-800 words addressing all points in the assessment instructions. Prior to submitting, ensure you can tick off all the boxes on the Checklist on the last page of this document.

Scenario
You are a volunteer at the Merivale Legal Centre in Sandgate, a community organisation which provides free legal advice, assistance and referral to the general public.
On Monday morning 6 April 2020, you have a new client come into your office.
The client, Sumit Prajeet, lives in Sandgate and tells you that he is experiencing abuse at the hands of his partner Michael. Sumit is a university student and almost completely reliant on his partner Michael for financial support. Sumit tells you that he has lived with Michael in Sandgate for about 2 years. He mentions that recently Michael has begun withholding financial support and become very controlling about who Sumit can associate with including preventing him from contacting his family and friends. Sumit also discloses that on 3 occasions over the past month Michael has become very aggressive and has physically attacked him which left him with cuts and bruises.
Sumit asks you to assist him with information about how to take action to stop this situation escalating. He also asks you if there are any other groups that may be able to help out. Sumit tells you that he emigrated to Australia just 3 years ago from Pakistan and has almost no knowledge of the legal system in Australia, or the law making process.
At the conclusion of the interview, you inform Sumit that you will do some research on these issues and send him an email with all the relevant information. Sumit has provided you with the following email address: Sumit.Prajeet@zmail.com

• When writing your email of advice to Sumit, ensure you address the following:
• Explain the rule of law. In your explanation, explain the relation to the separation of powers between the judiciary, executive and the legislature. Explain what each arm does and why their independence is so important
• Explain the six (6) stage process required to pass a Bill in Queensland. Briefly explain each step. Ensure you explain what a Bill is and mention who may introduce a Bill
• Discuss how the justice system may assist with this issue. Ensure you address each of the following points:
• Identify the legislation that deals with domestic violence in Queensland
• Outline the meaning of domestic violence
• Outline whether Sumit is in a relevant relationship
• Discuss the role of the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Courts including their ability to make orders in relation to domestic violence
• Provide advice regarding 3 community support agencies that can help Sumit. Ensure that these groups are relevant to the situation and close to where Sumit lives.

Hint: You also need to ensure that you write clearly in your email and explain any difficult topics/concepts, as Sumit does not have any prior knowledge of how the Australian legal system operates.
