1.a. Define a young person

In Australia a young person is defined as someone aged 12 to 25 years for the purpose of accessing government funding or services. They may also be called an adolescent.  People in this age bracket are either living at home completing high school, or attending tertiary training and attempting to enter the workforce. 

b. Provide your own insight into the history of Youth Work
Youth services have been provided within Australia by many different groups and have been delivered in various ways for example religious-groups, youth organisations and associations, non-government and government sectors. 
Implementation of legislation and development of youth policy was implemented national across Australia for example all children are mandated to remain in school until the age of 15.

2. Identify 3 government safety nets that are available for young people

Three government safety nets for young people are the Junction, ACT housing and Department of Human Services.
• The junction provides medical services (GPs, nurses, antenatal care, drug and alcohol counselling) and support services to the young people aged 12 to 25 years old. They assist with homelessness, disadvantaged and case management.
• Youth housing – community services directorate (ACT Government) provides youth (16 to 25 yrs) workers to assist with transitioning young people into social housing.
• Department of Human Services provides financial assistance (Abstudy/Austudy/Newstart etc) to young people and job network referrals.
 
3. Compare the social context of when you were 17years (or your parents) of age to that of a current 17-year-old.

When my mother was 17 in 1974, she’d been out of school for one year, she was married and had become a mother. There was no financial support from the government at that time and she had to pick fruit to make a living. There was no internet, no mobile phones and communication were made from a telephone box or through written letters.
2020:17-year old’s today have arrange of services to access than when my mother was 17 years old, they are able to access services for medical appointments, applying for accommodation/housing, welfare financial assistance (Department of Human Services). There is further education regarding drugs and alcohol, birth control, mental health than the 70s however there are more risks for young people nowadays due to the technology advancements for example social media, cyber bullying and isolation.
