Abstract
This study examines the communication platforms that Nepalese government used to disseminate information during the earthquake of 2015. As communication during critical times like earthquake is crucial on the matter of life and death, the effort government put into communicating in those times is analysed and reported in this study. Governments role in effective communication plan and implementation in the time of emergency situation is discussed. For the methodology, I am doing textual analysis of reports from the government sites and websites. Despite having various mediums of communication, I am specifically looking onto communication through Radio Nepal; a website of Nepal’s FM radio, articles, press releases and reports published through various INGO’s and NGO’s. I have also included a case study of another country similar to Nepal and the way that country handled earthquake crisis communication. This method challenges the way countries similar to each other handle communication challenges during earthquake crisis. The research shows the significant government plays not just in disaster management and crisis control but also in crisis communication.
Introduction
This research is focused on the context of Communication tools used by government during Nepal earthquake 2015 in consideration to crisis communication. The concept of crisis communication in regard to Nepalese administration is still an emerging topic, and not much has been written about it nor prioritized during crisis management.Nepal is a country with disasters happening frequently from floods, landslides, avalanches, glacial lake outbursts, cold waves, heat waves to earthquakes. Nepal takes the 11th spot as the most vulnerable country to earthquakes in the world as per United Nations (ECHO, 2019). According to the same factsheet, during rainy season, landslides and floods take lives of more than 1000 people yearly. The devastating earthquake of magnitude Mw7.8 hit Nepal on 25th April 2015 making Gorkha as its epicenter. Many aftershocks occurred afterwards that too of higher magnitudes among which another big aftershock of Mw7.3 on 12th May 2015 creating more damage to the country and people.Following the earthquake, different news media and online media started updating information about the earthquake, the damage, casualties, help information, support information all over the country. Even international medias like BBC News, CNN News including Indian media did report on the situation. Government started disseminating news, updates and help through the government channels on Television, FM Radio, websites and online platforms. Communication is a major part of running the world and in case of emergencies, it is very crucial. At the time of crisis, how the governing body of a country deals with the situation in terms of communication is discussed in this work.
