Order and or Delegation Procedure: The purpose of this medical directive is to improve and expedite the care of chest pain patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The directive may be used prior to a physician assessment by Registered Nurses (RN) working within the ED. The plan of care will ultimately be developed in collaboration with the ED physician and the health care team.
Recipient Patients: GRH and SMGH Emergency Department patients.
Authorized to Implement: In accordance with the Medical Directive Policies at Grand River Hospital (GRH) and St. Mary’s General Hospital (SMGH) and the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), Registered Nurses working within the ED may initiate diagnostic tests, interventions, and consultations for patients who meet the listed clinical criteria. This directive is intended solely for patients under the care of an attending GRH/SMGH Emergency Physician. Through this Medical Directive and the practice of co-implementation, the Registered Nurse is responsible for determining when to initiate a physician’s order for diagnostic tests, interventions and consultations contained in this Medical Directive, and another performs it. The authorized co-implementers for this Medical Directive are: Medical Laboratory Technologists and Medical Radiation Technologists.
