In the twentieth century, the ideas of both John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek played a major role in influencing political leaders and the government policies they adopted in response to events such as the Great Depression, the stagflation crisis of the 1970s and early 1980s, and the economic crisis of 2008. As you are aware, many western democracies adopted interventionist policies in response to the economic hardships caused by the Great Depression, and many of those same countries and their leaders then scaled back social welfare programming when economic stagnation coupled with high levels of unemployment began to take hold.
