Select a piece of contemporary research-based evidence (less than 5 years old) that is used to inform your practice. Examples may be an audit of best practice, national/international policy document, a systematic review, a piece of research, a risk management document or reflection on practice. Avoid using your organisational policy as local policies should be informed by a higher evidence base i.e. research-based evidence.
THINGS TO INCLUDE IN THE ASSIGNMENT
Number of words should be included on the Cover Page.
Introduction – Definitions – what is evidence-based practice. Then set the scene and specify the aims of the assignment and how you are going to achieve them. You should provide a rationale for choice of topic – why you have chosen this specific aspect of practice to critically analyse?
Use the 5 A’s Cycle as your guide.
Ask: Start by finding a problem in your workplace and develop the question.
Acquire: Tell how you find the Evidence. Keyword you use, which databases.
Appraise: Critical analysis of selected evidence. (Content of the slides in essay format).
Apply: Implications for practice – that is what have you learned from undertaking this analysis? What are the implications for your practice? How would you implement the evidence into your own practice area? Are there any limitations for implementing this evidence into your workplace? An example here is a student identified to me that as they worked in a different country, the hospital was owned by foreigners and the owners would not permit any evidence-based practice which was not published within their mother country.
Assess: Plan how you will evaluate the effectiveness
Conclusion- summarise the main points of your discussion.
Reference list – Ensure you include a full reference list – this should only contain only the references used in the text and appendices, it should be alphabetical, be presented in Harvard style and reflect your citations within your text. A bibliography is not acceptable at this level of study (meaning listed in reference list but not mentioned in the essay).
Integrated literature used to challenge or support your work must be referenced correctly using the Harvard method. (See programme handbook and “Cite Them Right”).
Appendices if needed could include any framework you have used for your analysis and should be fully referenced. Remember appendices should be relevant to the content of the main text and should be numbered according to how you have referred to them within the main text.
