Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) in New Zealand are trying to provide assistance and advice to their members to help them through a traumatic period for their businesses. The New Zealand border remains closed to international arrivals. It is unclear when the border may reopen, but it seems that limited international arrivals are likely over the next 12-18 months. With many tourism businesses struggling to survive now that the government’s wage subsidy no longer available, it is critical that tourism businesses find ways to survive by targeting new markets, most particularly local residents and domestic tourists.
You have been asked to draft an advisory statement for a Regional Tourism Organisation. Identify the RTO of your choice and prepare a short advisory statement to address the current crisis facing tourism businesses at this destination. This statement should briefly address:
1. The nature of the crisis facing tourism businesses in your chosen region (Note: circumstances vary significantly between different regional destinations);
2. The prospects of changes at the international border, and the implications for your chosen region;
3. Advice on the motivations of alternative (local/domestic) markets that may be targeted to help businesses survive while the border remains closed.
