Do I have to take part?

• The decision to take part is entirely your own. Should you wish to take part you will be required to sign an informed consent form on the day of the test. Nonetheless, upon deciding to take part you will remain free to withdraw from the investigation at any point. If you make the decision to withdraw, this will not affect your relationship with the testing team or any other individuals involved with their organisation.
• What are the aims of the test?
• The main aim of this testing protocol is to monitor cardiac function. It helps diagnosis and monitoring of conditions that affect the heart. It helps investigating symptoms of possible heart problems (e.g. palpitations).
• How many times will I have to visit the laboratory?
• You will only be required to visit the laboratory on one occasion, lasting approximately 1 hour.
• What will be required from you?
• Prior to completing the ECG, we will be required to take the following measurements:
• Your body weight, height, and BMI
• We will need to record your blood pressure
• Let me help you understand how this test is conducted. An ECG requires a number of electrodes to be placed at specific sites on the chest wall that can generate a range of electrical traces that represent different ‘views’ of the overall electrical activity of all the cardiomyocytes.
• In order to conduct this test, there is a need for you to remove your shirt / top, possibly shaved skin and cleaning the skin using alcoholic wipes. There may be a slight discomfort while removing the electrodes. An application of sensor electrode stickers may leave a bit of gel post removal of electrodes, until it is fully wiped off. You will not feel anything during the assessment.

• It can detect any silent cardiac conditions
• Ease of administration and relatively low cost and safe
• You can also get measurement of maximum heart rate by recording heart rate during the test, which can be used in training programs to set intensity
• What are the potential disadvantages of taking part?
• A static picture and may not reflect severe underlying heart problems at a time when the patient is not having any symptoms.
• It does not always permit an accurate diagnosis. It can be normal despite a serious heart problem.
• Relatively large time and costs required. Specialist training is required to interpret exercise ECG traces.
• Confidentiality
• All information which is collected about you during the course of the testing protocol will be kept strictly confidential. Any information which leaves the university will have your name removed so that you cannot be recognised.
• Who has reviewed the testing protocol(s)?
• Prior to any data being collected the testing protocols have been reviewed and approved by the Health, Exercise and Sport Science ethics committee at Solent University, Southampton, UK.
