Welcome to Human Rights-Based Practice and Community Development! This course will introduce you to human rights-based social work practice and with a focus on community development as an approach/method.

Learning about social work, human rights and community development takes more than one course. The way I see it, what this course can do for you is to guide you in surveying the broad field of human rights-based practice and community development and set you on a path for life-long learning in these important knowledge areas/fields of practice.

The course is designed to engage you in an active learning process through independent learning and in-class group activities and discussions, case analyses, and written analytical work. To do well in this course, you only need to engage in a specific set of activities in each of the 10 weeks of lessons as outlined in the course site. The first things you’d like to do would be to study this course outline and familiarise yourself with the course -site, particularly the home and Lesson 1 menus.

Course Aim
To critically analyse constructions of human rights and their application to social work and community development.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
CO1. Critically analyse human rights concepts, frameworks and policies as they relate to social justice and social action
CO2. Critically analyse Australia’s engagement with international human rights legislation and conventions
CO3. Critically analyse relevant policies and practices as they apply to disadvantaged groups and communities, including Indigenous Australians, from a human rights perspective
CO4. Demonstrate a specialist understanding of relevant community development theories, frameworks and practices in social work from a human rights perspective.
CO5. Demonstrate an understanding of how human rights concepts, frameworks and policies can be activated in social work with disadvantaged groups and communities, including Indigenous Australians.
