In this course, the nursing knowledge and skills introduced in previous courses are further developed. Nursing and associated care for patients with a variety of acute and chronic disease processes are considered using the framework and direction of the Australian National Health Priority Areas. Knowledge of pathophysiological processes will be integrated to support the nursing care required to ensure efficient, effective and appropriate care of patients in high-risk groups with acute and chronic conditions including cardiovascular disorders, asthma, and diabetes. Strategies for risk reduction and early detection of disease processes are examined. The ability to prescribe and undertake a variety of nursing interventions including perioperative care, admission and discharge planning, self-care management, community health and support services which contribute to the clinical care of a patient are also addressed. Nursing skills will be developed in the clinical laboratories using skill demonstration and simulated clinical practice. Capacity for critical reflection on clinical practice and the use of current research to provide a rationale for nursing practice and prepare for rapid and unpredictable change in health care will be enhanced.
