You are the editor of The Gazette, a weekly newspaper that appears on Friday morning in the bustling metropolis of Citrusberg. The Gazette also has a news website which is updated daily. On Thursday morning you receive a phone call from Roberta Ley, a clerk at the local SAPS station who you know. She tells you that a senior detective, Colonel Christo Sauckel, has just been arrested by the SIU (Hawks), apparently for corruption. Ley asks that you do not reveal her name or write anything that could lead to her being identified as the source of this info. You agree to this.
Your reporter contacts Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Carletta Brandt for more information. Brigadier Brandt confirms that a police officer has been arrested along with a civilian but won’t give any further information. “Their names will only be divulged following their first court appearance (in the Citrusberg High Court) tomorrow morning.”
Nobody at the local SAPS is prepared to speak to your reporter, but after phoning around trying to get comments you receive an email from an anonymous sender with the subject line, “Nou gaan hulle kak”, and an unsigned message saying, “Kykie, wat doen die Kolonel met Ballie? Taking bribes to destroy dockets, dats wat!”.
The email has an attached video still which looks like it was taken with CCTV somewhere in a yard in the industrial area. It shows Colonel Sauckel exchanging a package with Baldur “Ballie” Stuurman, a local nightclub owner who has numerous previous convictions, and has served jail terms, for assault GBH and drug dealing . The image has a date stamp showing that the video was recorded on Monday 19 April at around 3am.
You can see from the cc field that this email has been sent to a couple of other news outlets in the city. A short while later you receive a call from an undisclosed number. The caller won’t give his name but says he has worked with Col Sauckel in the past, and that his arrest is a set-up. “He’s being framed! The Colonel is as straight as an arrow; he’d never take a bribe. The reason people are after him is because he has been investigating those illegal SAPS tenders involving the top brass and Ozzie Rothaug, so now they want to take him out the picture.”
(You are familiar with the stories and allegations around Ozzie Rothaug, a prominent businessman who has several SAPS tenders for supplying vehicles and accommodation.)
When you tell the anonymous source about the image showing the colonel and Baldur Stuurman exchanging a package in the wee hours of the morning, he responds, “That’s complete nonsense! Ballie’s a bloody police informant. If anything, the colonel was probably giving HIM money. Oh shit, I shouldn’t have said that …”
